Surface Seeking

26 October – 9 December 2012

The surfaces of artworks can be as compelling and impressive as the ideas behind them. Without direct access to the concepts behind the artmaking or the intentions of the artist, the viewer’s perception of the work is immediately affected by the visual elements. Artists are aware of this; they play with scale, colour, material, patterning, texture and shape in order to communicate the ideas behind their art practice. Featuring the work of Debra Byrnes, Jonathon Hardy, Frank Murri and Alison Smith, this exhibition looked at the contemporary processes artists use to create their surfaces.
