1233 Portrait Prize

until 11 August 2013

Following the success of the inaugural 1233 Portrait Prize in 2012, Drive’s Paul Bevan and 1233 ABC Newcastle again invited the Hunter’s photographers to compete this year and submit portrait images with a link to the Hunter.

Of the over 300 entries received, 10 finalists were nominated by the judges to attend a personal photography workshop with photomedia artist Allan Chawner. These photographers – Shane Blue, Stuart Coutts, Charlie Hardy, Gina McDonald, Chris Old, Marion Petrovsky, Edwina Richards, Bella Schlachter, David Williams, Katherine Williams – then produced and submitted three new images. The best photograph from each finalist was selected for this exhibition. In a live broadcast on Thursday 27 June, Shane Blue was announced as the overall winner with his portrait of Hunter-based artist Brett McMahon.

This year, listeners also had the chance to vote for their favourite photograph. All of the entries were uploaded into an album on the 1233 Facebook page, with listeners able to ‘like’ their favourite images. Michelle Coghlan’s Tyson scored the most ‘likes’ and was awarded the 1233 Listeners Choice Award for 2013.
